"The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for managing the nation’s public lands. The wild horses and burros on the public rangelands are managed consistent with BLM’s multiple use mission which takes into consideration natural resources such as wildlife and vegetation and other users such as livestock and recreationists. With the passage of the Wild Horse and Burro Act of 1971, the primary responsibilities of the BLM are to preserve and protect wild horses and burros and to manage for healthy rangelands. When an overpopulation of wild horses and burros exists on the range, the excess animals are removed and offered to the general public for adoption." (this information provided courtesy of BLM)

In 1976 the Bureau of Land Management began it's Adopt-A-Horse-or-Burro Program.

This is Pryor Mountains Rebel....He picked Kristina out of all the people at the adoption. Those of you who are "mustang people" will understand that phrase...He is from the same herd as the little horse "Cloud" that PBS did a documentary on. She said the first day we were there that she "just seemed to be drawn to him". She kept saying..."I don't know what it is...." Anyway-its kinda the old adge we mustang people use...."He picked her"...

In July of 2004 the following people went to the adoption in Ocala: Eddie & Sandra , Darlene & Ashley , Keith & Michelle , Mary , Pat , Virginia , Elaine , Karen , and Dottie. Sandra brought Oreo. Elaine brought Black. Darlene brought Lakota and Eclipse. They were using them as examples for the potential adopters. I understand there were around 168 horses and about 140 were adopted out!! Two of the adopters were Michelle Berkstresser and Pat McLaughlin. Michelle adopted a beautiful bay gelding. He's around 3 years old and already about 15 hands. He's very calm and very flashy looking. He comes from California. He has a beautiful long black mane and tail. (side note - this is the gelding that Mary Patient fell in love with before we even knew Michelle was coming up to the adoption!!) Pat adopted a grey (YES GREY!) gelding from Wyoming. He is 5 years old and around 14.2 hands. He came from the Riverton Honor Farm and supposedly is 4th level training. Pat (me) plans on contacting someone from there to get more information on his training, etc. He looks very drafty and has a similar type head that Drifter has. Elaine talked one of the wranglers into haltering and working with the horse. He definitely knows how to lead and is very respectful of the person holding the rope - he will keep a respectful distance (could it be that he's nervous???) Congratulations to the both of us!! (it's kind of hard to say congrats to the both of you!)

In February of 2004, the BLM brought 140 wild horses and burros to the West Palm Beach - South Florida Fair Grounds..... many of us will never be the same. OK, so that's a little melodramatic, but so is the fact that our club members adopted almost 10% of those animals. The following are a few pics of our new family members.

Saki

Sandra, Eddie, Darlene, Ashley and Ray attended the Ocala, Fl mustang adoption on June 6th-June 8th. They brought along Saki, Lakota and Smoochie (yes that IS her name LOL) to promote the adoption of the mustangs. The horses (and owners) did a wonderful job. Ashley and Sandra rode their horses on Saturday before a very appreciative audience. Ashley also rode on Friday and Sunday. A tv crew was there and interviewed Sandra (of which I am still trying to get a copy, they want 53.00-63.00 for a copy) while Elaine handled Saki and Eddie and Darlene handled Lakota and Smoochie.

Several offers to buy were wielded by hopeful customers however no amount of money could talk us out of our horses.

Meeting up at the adoption was Elaine, Michael and Hunter, and Carrie and Bill Bruffey and Desirree Vaughn. Elaine helped me out with my horses when Eddie was busy.

Sandra and Eddie also talked a local feed dealer into taking home some mustangs
( Marc Stucker)
but no names please.

While there, we all mingled and helped people to decide to adopt or which ones to adopt. We had a ball......am looking forward to FINALLY having our own adoption here in West Palm Beach in 2004
